Where we staff in Massachusetts
Focused Behavioral recruits and places across Massachusetts's major markets — Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Cambridge, Lowell, Brockton, Quincy, Lynn, New Bedford, Fall River, Newton, and Lawrence — and the suburban and rural programs around them. That covers Greater Boston inside and outside Route 128, where most Massachusetts ABA clinics operate, plus the Merrimack Valley, the South Coast, Worcester County, and the Pioneer Valley programs that recruit hardest for DSPs.
The roles are the same statewide: RBTs and behavior technicians for clinic, in-home, and school-based ABA; BCBAs and BCaBAs for assessment, planning, and supervision; DSPs and residential staff for group homes and IDD/DD programs; and allied health roles. Tell us the city, the setting, and the shifts, and we build the pipeline there.
The Massachusetts staffing reality
Massachusetts was an early licensure state for ABA. A BCBA practicing here holds a Licensed Applied Behavior Analyst credential from the Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions, with degree and coursework requirements written into the statute and a two-year renewal cycle; assistants hold their own license. The clinician who is certified and willing may still be waiting on the Board.
Direct care in the Commonwealth runs through the Department of Developmental Services, and DDS layers three checks: the CORI criminal record check every employer uses, a DDS fingerprint-based state and national check that the law added in 2014 for anyone with potential unsupervised contact in DDS programs, and a separate Disabled Persons Protection Commission abuse registry check before hire. Then MAP — the Medication Administration Program — governs who may hand a resident a pill: 16 hours of training, a knowledge test, and a skills demonstration. From Boston's suburbs to the Pioneer Valley, that file is what sets a start date.
One Massachusetts client per region — your pipeline is yours
Most staffing agencies present the same candidates to every provider in a metro area, which means you are bidding against your neighbor for the same RBT or DSP. We do the opposite. Focused Behavioral works with one client per region, so if we build your pipeline in your part of Massachusetts, we will not supply the provider across town. The candidates we develop for your programs go to your programs.
Massachusetts's clearances and credentials, handled before you see a name
The longest stretch in most behavioral health hires is not finding the person — it is the paperwork. Our credentialing system tracks each candidate's licenses, clearances, TB tests, and vaccination records, flags expirations before they lapse, and keeps every file audit-ready. In practice, that automation cuts hiring time roughly in half. In Massachusetts, the state's own background-check, registry, and licensure steps described below are verified before a candidate reaches your shortlist.
Temp-to-hire with no conversion fee
Every placement can begin as an evaluation. A professional works in your Massachusetts program on our payroll; you watch how they handle real shifts, real clients, and real documentation. If they fit, they convert to your payroll — and the conversion fee is zero dollars. If they do not, you have lost nothing. It starts with a free 30-minute discovery call.
What Massachusetts requires before a start
The BACB layer applies everywhere, Massachusetts included. An RBT is at least 18, passes a background and abuse-registry check, completes the 40-hour training and competency assessment, passes the RBT exam, and is then supervised for at least 5% of service hours each month BACB, RBT 2026 requirements. A BCBA holds a master's degree or higher, completes behavior-analytic coursework or an accredited program and 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork (or 1,500 concentrated hours), passes the BCBA exam, and recertifies every two years BACB, BCBA Handbook. Here is what Massachusetts adds on top.
A state license — M.G.L. c. 112, §§163–172. The Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions licenses applied behavior analysts and assistant applied behavior analysts; the assistant practices under the supervision of a licensed applied behavior analyst M.G.L. c. 112, §163. A licensed applied behavior analyst holds a doctorate with a minimum of 60 graduate credit hours in courses related to the study of behavior analysis, a master's with at least 30, or a related graduate degree plus a board-approved certificate, with supervised experience and a board-approved examination; an assistant holds a bachelor's degree with at least 135 classroom hours in behavior analysis M.G.L. c. 112, §165. Licenses are valid for two years and must be renewed biennially M.G.L. c. 112, §168.
Technicians are not licensed. The statute defines only the two licensed roles; a behavior technician works under the licensed analyst's supervision and may not hold out as a licensed behavior analyst or licensed assistant behavior analyst M.G.L. c. 112, §163. The BACB's RBT credential is the evidence of training to verify.
CORI, DDS fingerprinting, and the DPPC registry. Employers may obtain Criminal Offender Record Information to evaluate current and prospective employees M.G.L. c. 6, §172. On top of CORI, M.G.L. c. 19B, §19 requires the Department of Developmental Services to conduct fingerprint-based checks of the state and national criminal history databases for current and prospective employees, interns, volunteers, and subcontractors of DDS-licensed, -funded, or -approved programs who may have unsupervised contact with persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities M.G.L. c. 19B, §19. DDS states that the fingerprint check is distinct from and in addition to the existing CORI check and the separate Disabled Persons Protection Commission abuse registry check Mass. DDS, fingerprint background checks.
MAP certification and abuse-reporting training. Staff who administer medication in DDS adult programs complete MAP certification training conducted by an approved MAP trainer and a minimum of 16 hours in length, then pass a knowledge test and a medication administration demonstration skill test before administering; certification is valid two years Mass. MAP certification training and testing. Under 115 CMR 9.04, every provider gives direct care staff an initial and subsequent periodic orientation on the purpose and principal provisions of M.G.L. c. 19C and 115 CMR 9.00 — the abuse reporting and investigation rules 115 CMR 9.00.

Common questions.
Where in Massachusetts do you staff?
Statewide — the major markets named above and the suburban and rural programs around them. Tell us the city and the setting on the discovery call and we build the pipeline there.
Does a BCBA need a Massachusetts license?
Yes. Massachusetts licenses Applied Behavior Analysts and Assistant Applied Behavior Analysts through the Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions under M.G.L. c. 112, §§163–172. Licenses run two years. We verify the LABA license as active, not just the BACB certification.
Do Massachusetts RBTs need a state license?
No. The statute defines only the two licensed roles, and a technician works under the licensed analyst's supervision. We verify the RBT's BACB certification and document the supervising LABA.
What background checks do Massachusetts DSPs and group home staff need?
Three: a CORI criminal record check, a DDS fingerprint-based state and national check under M.G.L. c. 19B, §19 for anyone with potential unsupervised contact in a DDS-licensed, -funded, or -approved program, and a Disabled Persons Protection Commission abuse registry check before hire. We complete those checks before a candidate reaches your shortlist.
What is MAP certification?
The Medication Administration Program certification required for staff who administer medication in DDS adult programs: at least 16 hours of training by an approved MAP trainer, a knowledge test, and a medication administration skills demonstration, valid for two years. We document MAP status for every candidate whose role includes medication.
What does temp-to-hire cost in Massachusetts?
The agreed hourly bill rate during the evaluation, and no conversion fee when you bring the professional onto your own payroll. One client per region applies here as everywhere: if we build your pipeline in your territory, a competing provider there is not our client.
