Where we staff in Montana

Focused Behavioral recruits and places across Montana's major markets — Billings, Missoula, Great Falls, Bozeman, Butte, Helena, Kalispell, Havre, Belgrade, Miles City, and Livingston — and the suburban and rural programs around them. That covers the Yellowstone Valley around Billings, Western Montana from Missoula to the Flathead Valley around Kalispell, the Gallatin Valley around Bozeman and Belgrade, Helena and Butte, and the Hi-Line and eastern programs around Great Falls, Havre, and Miles City.

The roles are the same statewide: RBTs and behavior technicians for clinic, in-home, and school-based ABA; BCBAs and BCaBAs for assessment, planning, and supervision; DSPs and residential staff for group homes and IDD/DD programs; and allied health roles. Tell us the city, the setting, and the shifts, and we build the pipeline there.

The Montana staffing reality

Montana licenses behavior analysts through the Board of Psychologists, and no one may hold themselves out as a behavior analyst or assistant behavior analyst without that license. The license rests on current BACB certification plus a fingerprint-based background check by the Montana Department of Justice and the FBI. Technicians are exempt from licensure when a licensed behavior analyst supervises them — and the statute requires that supervision — while Montana Medicaid bills every ABA service under the supervising BCBA's NPI.

For people with developmental disabilities, the Developmental Disabilities Program contracts with provider agencies under the 0208 Comprehensive Waiver. Direct care staff need a Department of Justice criminal background check, and residential habilitation staff complete abuse and incident reporting, confidentiality, and CPR and First Aid within 30 days, plus College of Direct Supports Tier 1 within six months. From Billings and Missoula to Great Falls and Bozeman, that file is what sets a start date.

One Montana client per region — your pipeline is yours

Most staffing agencies present the same candidates to every provider in a metro area, which means you are bidding against your neighbor for the same RBT or DSP. We do the opposite. Focused Behavioral works with one client per region, so if we build your pipeline in your part of Montana, we will not supply the provider across town. The candidates we develop for your programs go to your programs.

Montana's clearances and credentials, handled before you see a name

The longest stretch in most behavioral health hires is not finding the person — it is the paperwork. Our credentialing system tracks each candidate's licenses, clearances, TB tests, and vaccination records, flags expirations before they lapse, and keeps every file audit-ready. In practice, that automation cuts hiring time roughly in half. In Montana, the state's own background-check, registry, and licensure steps described below are verified before a candidate reaches your shortlist.

Temp-to-hire with no conversion fee

Every placement can begin as an evaluation. A professional works in your Montana program on our payroll; you watch how they handle real shifts, real clients, and real documentation. If they fit, they convert to your payroll — and the conversion fee is zero dollars. If they do not, you have lost nothing. It starts with a free 30-minute discovery call.

What Montana requires before a start

The BACB layer applies everywhere, Montana included. An RBT is at least 18, passes a background and abuse-registry check, completes the 40-hour training and competency assessment, passes the RBT exam, and is then supervised for at least 5% of service hours each month BACB, RBT 2026 requirements. A BCBA holds a master's degree or higher, completes behavior-analytic coursework or an accredited program and 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork (or 1,500 concentrated hours), passes the BCBA exam, and recertifies every two years BACB, BCBA Handbook. Here is what Montana adds on top.

A state license — MCA 37-17 Part 4. The Board of Psychologists regulates behavior analysis MCA 37-17-402. An individual may not represent to the public that they are a behavior analyst or assistant behavior analyst without a license. The board licenses an applicant who submits an application and fees, submits a full set of fingerprints for a fingerprint-based criminal record background check by the Montana Department of Justice and the FBI, provides evidence of current BACB certification at the appropriate level, is of good moral character, and attests to abiding by the BACB's professional and ethical code. A behavior analyst must also have passed the BCBA examination, be currently certified, and meet the board's coursework requirements; an assistant behavior analyst must have passed the BCaBA examination and be currently certified as an assistant MCA 37-17-403. School district personnel, including those who provide special education, family support specialists with an autism endorsement, licensed psychologists, licensed clinical professional counselors, and licensed social workers are among those exempt MCA 37-17-404.

Technicians: supervised, not licensed. A behavior technician supervised by a licensed behavior analyst is exempt from licensure MCA 37-17-404, and an assistant behavior analyst or behavior technician practicing applied behavior analysis must be supervised by a licensed behavior analyst or by a licensed psychologist certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in behavioral and cognitive psychology MCA 37-17-405. Montana Medicaid's ABA manual describes RBTs as practicing under the direction and close supervision of a BCBA, who is responsible for all work RBTs perform; the BCBA assumes full professional responsibility for services provided by a BCaBA or RBT, and all services are billed under the BCBA's National Provider Identifier Montana Medicaid ABA Services Manual.

Developmental Disabilities Program background checks. Staff employed by agencies contracting with the DDP for direct care services must have a criminal background check completed by the Montana Department of Justice. The department offers name-based and fingerprint-based checks; the policy calls fingerprint-based checks preferable, with results generally returned within ten days of the department's receipt; name-based results generally return within three days DDP Criminal History Background Check Policy.

0208 Comprehensive Waiver staff training. Residential habilitation staff must pass a background check, be at least 17, and complete abuse reporting, incident reporting, client confidentiality, CPR and First Aid, and any special training in the person's support plan within 30 days, College of Direct Supports Tier 1 within six months, and 12 hours of annual training after the first year; the agency is licensed under ARM 37.100.301 to 37.100.340 and complies with the medication rule and the staffing rule in ARM 37.34. Providers document each training's date, trainer, trainee signature, type, agenda, and hours. For Behavioral Support Services, the qualifications listed include a BCBA-D, BCBA, or BCaBA licensed in the State of Montana DDP 0208 Comprehensive Waiver Provider Manual.

FAQ

Common questions.

Where in Montana do you staff?

Statewide — the major markets named above and the suburban and rural programs around them. Tell us the city and the setting on the discovery call and we build the pipeline there.

Does a BCBA need a Montana license?

Yes. Under MCA 37-17-403, no one may represent themselves as a behavior analyst or assistant behavior analyst in Montana without a license from the Board of Psychologists, and licensure requires current BACB certification and a fingerprint-based Montana Department of Justice and FBI background check. The DDP waiver manual also lists Montana licensure for BCBA, BCBA-D, and BCaBA behavioral support providers. We verify the Montana license as active, not just the BACB certification.

Do Montana RBTs need a state license?

No. Under MCA 37-17-404, a behavior technician supervised by a licensed behavior analyst is exempt from licensure, and MCA 37-17-405 requires that supervision by a licensed behavior analyst or an ABPP-certified behavioral and cognitive psychologist. Montana Medicaid bills all ABA services under the supervising BCBA's NPI. We verify the RBT credential and document the supervising analyst.

What background checks do Montana DSPs and group home staff need?

Under the Developmental Disabilities Program's policy, staff at agencies contracting with the DDP for direct care need a criminal background check completed by the Montana Department of Justice, which offers name-based and preferred fingerprint-based checks. We complete that check before a candidate reaches your shortlist.

What training do Montana DDP direct-care staff need?

Under the 0208 Comprehensive Waiver provider manual, residential habilitation staff are at least 17 and complete abuse reporting, incident reporting, confidentiality, CPR and First Aid, and the special training in the person's support plan within 30 days, College of Direct Supports Tier 1 within six months, and 12 hours of annual training after the first year. We document each candidate's training status so you know what the start date carries.

What does temp-to-hire cost in Montana?

The agreed hourly bill rate during the evaluation, and no conversion fee when you bring the professional onto your own payroll. One client per region applies here as everywhere: if we build your pipeline in your territory, a competing provider there is not our client.
